The Sustainable Development Foundation


The Sustainable Development Foundation is a think-thank, registered in Italy as "not-for-profit organization", born in 2008 by will of companies, association of companies and sustainability experts, in order to encourage a sustainable growth. Today it can rely on a network of more that 150 members and a staff of 30 people, based in Rome.

The President of the Foundation is Edo Ronchi, former Ministry of Environment (1996-2000), who signed for Italy the Kyoto protocol in 1998. The director is Raimondo Orsini, former UIC and Trenitalia professional in environmental management.

The Foundation can provide technical support and partnerships. It publishes reports and research into energy and climate, circular economy, sustainable mobility, environment management; it holds workshop, lectures, conferences and learning events.
It is member of UN Global Compact, organizational stakeholder of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), member ofTransport and Environment and ISWA (International solid waste association).

The Foundation has been partner of UIC in many projects, such as “Environment Strategy Reporting System”, “Zero carbon railways”, “Ecopassenger”, “Ecotransit”, “UIC-IEA Handbook-energy consumption/CO2 emissions”, “Railways for green growth”, “UIC Asia Vision 2050”.




ERESS - European partnership for railway energy settlement systems

Eress is a non-profit organisation, jointly owned by its partners, committed to the development, implementation and supply of the IT system for energy settlement called Erex.

Erex is an optimal solution for Infrastructure Managers and Train Operators.
Train Operators do get an accurate energy invoice based on the real energy they have used, not based just on estimates. They get a full overview over their real energy consumption at any time and for any of their traction units, including international traffic.

Infrastructure managers can rely on Erex system, ensuring accurate energy billing and transparency for all train operators running in their networks. They get a high quality proven system for free, just paying for adaptation costs. Eress is an open partnership and welcomes all infrastructure managers in Europe.

Why Erex system?
